Round Nine

Johnson & Miller: Time to Shine

By this time tomorrow night, Wyoming could very well be the home of two new champions of professional rodeo. Jhett Johnson and partner Turtle Powell made money in Round 9 tonight ($2,900-6th place) but more importantly they’ve secured the #1 spot in the average race. It’s a slim lead of six-tenths of a second nonetheless it is sufficient given the nature of team roping at the national finals. “One more baby,” Jhett wrote to us late tonight. Let the chant begin now. Stand up Wyoming: ONE MORE BABY!

Jason Miller was out of the money in Round 9 and said he surely didn’t get done what he wanted to tonight. “It’s just a one-header tomorrow,’” Miller said. With the majority of the events already all but decided, steer wrestling is going to get everyone out of their seats. Six-tenths of a second separates Shawn Greenfield, Jason and Luke Branquinho. Their world standings spots are just the reverse with Luke leading the trio going into Round 10.

Welsh Cashes In

Gillette’s Bobby Welsh held his position just long enough on a bull called “Distant Thunder” tonight to finish third in the field of fifteen. Welsh is satisfied overall with his work at this years’ national finals:

Money For Brockman

He wanted to win a lot more than the $16K pocketed thus far at the national finals by steer wrestler Seth Brockman of Wheatland. Seth will take it, learn from the Vegas experience, and go a big check in the finals tomorrow. Brockman tossed one for $2,500 Friday night:
